Contract finalized on purchase of 6 more ATR aircraft - Mehr News Agency

Iran Air CEO:

فرود دو فروند هواپیمای ای تی ار خریداری شده در تهران TEHRAN, Oct. 12 (MNA) – Iran Air (HOMA) CEO Farzaneh Sharafbafi announced Thu. that the contract on the purchase of six more ATR aircraft has been finalized with the Franco-Italian plane manufacturer.

Speaking to reporters Thursday morning on the sidelines of the arrival of the second newly-purchased ATR aircraft at Bandar Abbas International Airport, Iran Air (HOMA) CEO Farzaneh Sharafbafi added that the aircraft will fly in ten domestic flight routes.

The next stage will be to have the ATR aircraft fly in the flight routes of the Persian Gulf littoral states, she added.

According to her, a contract on the purchase of 20 other ATR aircraft is being drawn up with the Franco-Italian plane manufacturer.

She expressed hope that all purchased ATR aircraft will be delivered to Iran by the end of 2018 as mentioned in the contract in order to boost the country’s aviation sector.

Back in April, Iran signed a deal on the purchase of 20 ATR 72-600 with ATR as a third aircraft manufacturer after having signed lucrative deals with Airbus and Boeing following the implementation of the nuclear deal.

The first package including four out of the twenty purchased ATR aircraft landed in Tehran in May 17, followed by two more on September 29.

The ATR 72-600 has a range of 1,500km and 70 seats.

Iran makes strong presence at Offshore Energy 2017 - Mehr News Agency سفیر در هلند TEHRAN, Oct. 11 (MNA) – The 17th exhibition and conference of Offshore Energy is currently underway in the Netherlands with a strong participation from Iranian companies and Iran’s ambassador to The Hague.

The Offshore Energy 2017 kicked off on Tuesday in Amsterdam with participation of 7550 international companies from 99 countries, including Iran, with an aim to present opportunities, capabilities and transfer of new technologies in the offshore and marine energy sectors.

In this year’s edition, 18 Iranian companies in the form of 10-membered delegations comprising managers and experts from the offshore oil and gas industry are showcasing their products and services at Iran’s pavilion.

The three-day event addresses the technical, operational and commercial challenges associated with future sector growth.

Speaking on the sidelines of the exhibition, Iranian ambassador to The Hague Alireza Jahangiri highlighted Iran and the Netherlands’ relations in the post-JCPOA era, saying the two countries have a number of plans and policies on agenda for further development of bilateral cooperation; “within this framework, the energy sector is one of the most promising sectors for expanding relations between the two countries,” he added.

“Iran’s policy is to stay away from crude oil and gas sales and move toward offshore energy,” Jahangiri said. “For this end, the Netherlands’ technology and investment can prove helpful for realization of Iran’s policies.”

TEHRAN, Oct. 11 (MNA) – Millions of young people in developing countries who are poised to enter the labour force in the coming decades need not flee rural areas to escape poverty, argues a new FAO report published today.

Rural areas actually have vast potential for economic growth pegged to food production and related sectors, The State of Food and Agriculture 2017 says. And with the majority of the world's poor and hungry living in these areas, achieving the 2030 development agenda will hinge on unlocking that oft-neglected potential, it adds.

Doing so will require overcoming a thorny combination of low productivity in subsistence agriculture, limited scope for industrialization in many places, and rapid population growth and urbanization — all of which pose challenges to developing nations' capacity to feed and employ their citizens.

There is ample evidence that changes to rural economies can have major impacts. Transformations of rural economies have been credited with helping hundreds of millions of rural people lift themselves up out of poverty since the 1990s, the report notes.

However, that progress has been patchy, and demographic growth is raising the stakes.

Between 2015 and 2030, the ranks of people aged 15-24 years are expected to rise by about 100 million, to 1.3 billion. Almost all that increase will take place in sub-Saharan Africa — the lion's share of it in rural zones.

But in many developing countries — most notably in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa — growth in the industrial and service sectors has lagged, and they will not be able to absorb the massive numbers of new job seekers set to enter the workforce.

Nor will agriculture — in its current form.

So rural people who relocate to cities will likely run a greater risk of joining the ranks of the urban poor, instead of finding a pathway out of poverty. Others will need to look for employment elsewhere, leading to seasonal — or permanent — migration.

This is why targeting policy support and investment to rural areas to build vibrant food systems and supporting agro-industries that are well connected to urban zones —especially small and medium size cities — will create employment and allow more people to stay, and thrive, in the countryside  represents a strategic intervention, today's report says.

Transformed rural economies won't necessarily be a panacea that solves all the pressures that drive people to relocate, but they will generate much-needed jobs and contribute to making out-migration more of a choice, rather than a necessity.

“Too often ignored by policy-makers and planners, territorial networks of small cities and towns are important reference points for rural people — the places where they buy their seed, send their children to school and access medical care and other services,” FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva notes in his forward to the report.

“Policy-makers are urged to recognize the catalytic role of small cities and towns in mediating the rural-urban nexus and providing smallholder farmers with greater opportunities to market their produce and share in the benefits of economic growth,” he adds.

How urban food demand can spark rural renewal

The State of Food and Agriculture makes the case that needed transformations in rural economies can be sparked by leveraging growing demand for food in urban areas to diversify food systems and generate new economic opportunities in off-farm, agriculture -related activities.

This includes enterprises that process or refine, package or transport, and store, market or sell food, as well as businesses that supply production inputs such as seeds, tools and equipment, and fertilizers or provide irrigation, tilling or other services

Already, growing demand coming from urban food markets currently consumes up to 70 percent of national food supplies, even in countries with large rural populations, the report notes.

No silver bullets

But while urbanization provides a ‘golden opportunity’ for agriculture, it also presents challenges for millions of small-scale family farmers.

Markets that are more profitable can lead to the concentration of food production in large commercial farms, to value chains dominated by large processors and retailers, and to the exclusion of smallholders.

So supportive public policies and investments will be key to harnessing urban demand as an engine for transformative and equitable growth, and measures designed to ensure market participation by small-scale, family-farmers must be hard-wired into policies.

Family farmers, infrastructure, small cities and towns

The study lays out three lines for action:

The first involves putting in place a range of policies designed to ensure that small-scale producers are able to participate fully in meeting urban food demands. Measures to strengthen land tenure rights, ensure equity in supply contracts, or improve access to credit are but a few options.

The second is to build up the necessary infrastructure to connect rural areas and urban markets — in many developing countries the lack of rural roads, electrical power grids, storage facilities, and refrigerated transportation systems is a major bottleneck for farmers seeking to take advantage of urban demand for fresh fruit, vegetables, meat and dairy.

The third involves including not just mega-cities into well-connected rural-urban economies but knitting in smaller, more spread-out urban areas as well.

Indeed, the report stresses that smaller urban centers represent a much overlooked market for food. Half of all urban dwellers in developing countries live in cities and towns of fewer than 500,000 people.

NIOC head:

Iran oil TEHRAN, Oct. 11 (MNA) – Head of National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) said volume of the country’s oil production was expected to climb to approximately six million barrels per day by the year 2022.

Ali Kardor, while addressing a congress in Tehran, made the announcement adding “the envisaged objective is obtainable in case recovery rates are maximized and foreign investment and know-how are attracted.

On holding international oil tenders, the official said technical models were still being received and analyzed. He noted that the tender for development of Azadegan field would not be held in the year 2017 asserting “a consortium will be formed for the purpose.”

Without naming the companies eager to join the consortium, the official said some firms were seriously pursuing negotiations over the Iranian field.

Deputy oil minister later touched upon the change in policies of the US explaining that the issue has so far had no effect on global conditions.

“Chinese and Europeans have made no reactions to remarks by US President Donald Trump and are still willing to hold talks with Iran,” he continued.

He recalled that the country’s crude output level had been six million barrels prior to the Islamic Revolution adding “regaining the production figure now seems attainable thanks to measures taken over the past two years like increasing recovery factors and market reactions though foreign technology and investment also needs to be absorbed.”

Ali Kardor reiterated that NIOC had put expansion of joint field high on agenda in a bid to boost production levels in these fields.

Iran’s overall crude output now resides at 3.9 million barrels per day while any larger figure demands development of oil fields and implementation of plans to bolster recovery factor.

Iran’s crude production capacity is projected to reach six million bpd by the end of the 6th five-year development plan to 2022.

Tehran (ISNA) – The Central Bank of Iran has signed a cooperation agreement with Turkey’s ECO Trade and Development Bank that could pave the way for the multilateral lender to grant finances to Iran.

The agreement was signed during the visit of CBI Governor Valiollah Seif to Ankara. He was accompanied by Iran's ambassador to Turkey Mohammad Ebrahim Taherian-Fard, and CBI's secretary-general for international affairs Hossein Yaqoubi, who signed the deal with ECO's Vice president Burhanettin Aktas, Financial Tribune reported.

"Based on the agreement, conditions and regulations of the activities of ECO bank's representative office in Iran will be devised," the official news website of CBI reported.

As the central bank notes, signing the landmark agreement became possible following a directive by the Cabinet, which decrees that the processes for implementing the agreement must be finalized in a maximum three years.

In early September, President Hassan Rouhani's Cabinet allowed CBI to engage in negotiations and sign the "agreement of the host country" required for the ECO Trade and Development Bank to open a representative office in Iran.

As outlined by the central bank, the agreement will become legally binding following the required processes and the parliament's approval.

The agreement prepares the ground for the ECO bank to expand its activities in Iran and grant loans and finances to development projects in Iran.

"The bank will be able to have an effective role in the expansion of trade between the member states of the ECO organization," CBI writes.
